Why Have You Forsaken Me?

“At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon
Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?’ 9which means ‘My God, my God, why have
you forsaken me?’).” Mark 15:33-34

“For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears.
When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a
man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we
shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.” 1
Corinthians 13:9-12

1. The Father turned away, and allowed His son to feel forsaken because of his love for us

“Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrongdoing.” Habakkuk 1:13
“God made him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of
God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

2. Jesus endured the pain of feeling forsaken, so that we could be reconciled back to the Father

“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness;
by his wounds you have been healed.” 1 Peter 2:24

What to do when the “Why” is overwhelming: Grieve the situation, but remember God is here, and he is making a way!

“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us
hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our
weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.
Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find
grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 3:14-16
