Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV) “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
QUESTIONS TO ASK IN SEARCH OF REST
What Is Rest?
Rest is spiritual, not just physical.
Who Finds Rest?
The weary and burdened can find rest.
The presence of God will bring rest to you as you serve Him.
God can refresh you in difficult places.
Where Can Rest Be Found?
Rest in the goodness and care of God.
Rest in Jesus.
How Do You Find Rest?
THREE STEPS TO FINDING REST
Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV) “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
1. TAKE
A yoke brings partnership and connection.
Rest is work.
Taking Jesus’ yoke means knowing who He is.
Taking Jesus’ yoke means knowing who you are.
Psalms 119:59 (NIV) I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes.
You must make space to take up Jesus’ yoke.
Do you need to make space to rest?
Psalms 139:23-24 (NIV)
23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
What drains you?
What fills you?
Romans 15:32 (NIV) so that I may come to you with joy, by God’s will, and in your company be refreshed.
2. LEARN
Learn Gentleness
Matthew 5:5 (NIV) Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Learn Humility
Philippians 2:5 (NLT) You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.
Philippians 2:3-4 (NLT) Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
If you struggle with gentleness or humility, you may be in need of rest.
Jeremiah 6:16 (NIV)
16 This is what the LORD says:
“Stand at the crossroads and look;
ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and walk in it,
and you will find rest for your souls.
But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
Rejected rest leads to exile.
We must choose being over doing.
3. FIND
Jesus yoke is easy.
In a world of hurt and complexity, Jesus offers rest.
Matthew 11: 28-30 (MSG) “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Jesus burden is light.
In a world of difficulty, Jesus offers rest.
Matthew 11:27 (NIV) “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
Matthew 11:28 (NIV) “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
