Sermon Notes

Recap of Last Week

God revealed His name as Yahweh to Moses in Exodus, meaning “I Am Who I Am.”

Exodus 34:6-7: God’s character: Compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love, and faithful.

God’s name isn’t just a title; it’s an invitation to reflect His character in the world.

The Power of Formation

Romans 12:1-2: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

We are constantly being shaped by our environment, experiences, and habits.

You are either being transformed into the love and beauty of Jesus or malformed by the entropy of sin and death. —John Mark Comer

Jesus’ Invitation

Mark 1:14-20: Jesus called His disciples to “Come, follow me.”

The disciples left their nets, their old ways, and apprenticed under Jesus.

Matthew 16:24: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”

Key Thought: Following Jesus requires letting go of old habits to embrace new ones rooted in Him.

The Habit of Proximity

God’s first habit with humanity was walking in relationship with Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:8-9).

Sin creates habits of shame and hiding, but Jesus invites us to practice closeness with Him:
1. Spending time in His Word.
2. Prayer and worship.
3. Fellowship with other believers.

Spirit-led Habits

Evaluate habits through these questions:
1. Is it Holy or Honorable? (1 Peter 1:14-15)
2. Is it Actionable? (Romans 12:1-2)
3. Is it Beautiful? (2 Corinthians 5:17)
4. Is it Invitational? (Matthew 5:16)
5. Is it Thoughtful? (Philippians 4:8)
6. Is it Selfless? (Philippians 2:3-4)

Example: Generosity
Practicing generosity aligns with God’s character:
1. Holy if done for God’s glory, not personal fame.
2. Actionable through tithing or blessing others.
3. Adds beauty to the world and points people to Jesus.

Questions and challenges:

Q: Pastor Jason shared about how habits shape us over time. What’s one habit you’ve picked up—good or bad—that has become a part of your daily life?

Q: In Mark 1:18-20, the disciples immediately dropped their nets to follow Jesus. What might those “nets” represent in your own life?

Q: Romans 12:1-2 challenges us to avoid conforming to the world and instead be transformed by the renewing of our minds. What are some ways the world tries to shape us, and how can we resist that influence?

Q: Pastor Jason emphasized that spiritual formation isn’t optional—we are either being shaped into the love of Jesus or malformed by sin. How have you seen this truth play out in your life or the lives of others?

Q: One of the Spirit-led habits mentioned was practicing proximity with Jesus—spending time in His Word, prayer, and fellowship. Which of these do you find most natural, and which requires more effort for you?

Q: As a group, let’s identify one “Spirit-led habit” (Holy, Actionable, Beautiful, Invitational, Thoughtful, Selfless) that we can intentionally practice this week. How can we encourage each other in this?
