TEXT
“One day as Jesus was preaching
on the shore of the Sea of Galilee,
great crowds pressed in on Him
to listen to the word of God.
He noticed two empty boats
at the water’s edge,
for the fishermen had left them
and were washing their nets.
Stepping into one of the boats,
Jesus asked Simon, its owner,
to push it out into the water.
So He sat in the boat
and taught the crowds from there.
When He had finished speaking,
He said to Simon,
“Now go out where it is deeper,
and let down your nets to catch some fish.”
“Master,” Simon replied,
“we worked hard all last night
and didn’t catch a thing.
But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”
And this time their nets
were so full of fish they began to tear!
A shout for help brought their partners
in the other boat,
and soon both boats were filled with fish
and on the verge of sinking.
When Simon Peter realized
what had happened,
he fell to his knees before Jesus and said,
“Oh, Lord, please leave me—
I’m such a sinful man.”
For he was awestruck
by the number of fish they had caught,
as were the others with Him.
His partners, James and John,
the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed.
Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid!
From now on you’ll be fishing for people!”
And as soon as they landed,
they left everything and followed Jesus.” —Luke 5:1-11 NLT
TEACHING [Observations and Insights]
• The Missiontry is a partnership. It was never meant to be done alone or as a means of personal significance or success.
Jesus always included others, recognizing the greater vision:
“Reaching the lost, Making disciples, and Multiplying leaders.”
• Jesus was intentionally inclusive, building relationships that made others
feel valued, fulfilled, and empowered to succeed in their
purpose and calling. “WORK Together; WAR Together; WIN Together”
• Before being called to be disciples, each person had a different
profession—Jesus was a carpenter, some disciples were fishermen,
and one was a tax collector, among others. [pre-training work ethic]
• You can do your ministry by yourself, but if you want to experience
a miracle, it takes a partnership, not just a friendship.
[Do things as a Small Group]
[“10 Essential Qualities Of A Healthy Partnership”]
“I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning
anything you ask, My Father in heaven will do it for you.
For where two or three gather together as my followers,
I am there among them.” —Matthew 18:19-20 NLT
• Jesus modeled the principle of asking by asking. Leader’s show the way.
• Shout for help if you need to. Don’t try to superhero it through life.
Your blessings should be big enough that you need help
and want to share it with others.
[Abundance: “bumbucha kine blessings” ‘Bulk Blessings’ Costco]
• Like Peter we should all recognize our need for God in the presence
of Jesus. Without Him we can do nothing and are unworthy.
We are sinners that need to repent constantly and consistently.
Who is God to you? [Worship song: “Because of Who You Are”]
• When God fills your nets with abundance and prosperity,
share it with others. Don’t be greedy or hoard.
This why we give our Tithes and Offerings.
“Bless Our Neighbors”
• Always act in Faith, Trust, and Obedience with Jesus.
• The very area where you’ve experienced failure can become a place
of success when Jesus guides you.
The place of scarcity can become a place of abundance once again!
Trust His directions and instructions without doubt.
“God can always make a way even if there seems to be no way.”
• If Jesus says go, go. Don’t doubt, hesitate, or procrastinate.
• Faith is spelled “RISK”
• Jesus is always willing to go with us, and be with us
even if it means we may fail or make okole.
APPLICATION
FACING IMPOSSIBLE SITUATIONS
1) Trusting God In Uncertain Situations
Sometimes, like Peter, we are called to trust God
even when circumstances suggest otherwise.
This passage encourages believers to take steps of faith,
trusting that God can provide beyond our expectations.
2) Humility And Repentance
Peter’s reaction to Jesus’ miracle (recognizing his own sinfulness)
is a reminder that humility is essential when we come before God.
This can be a call to repentance and a deeper awareness of God’s holiness.
“Many are the pastors, preachers, and volunteers
who labor long and hard and “catch” nothing.
But Christ continues to say:
“Let down your nets.” One day there will be fish.” —-Applied New Testament Commentary
3) Evangelism, Purpose, And Discipleship
The phrase “fishers of men” is a powerful metaphor for the missiontry
of all believers—to share the gospel and bring others to Jesus.
It emphasizes that God often calls us beyond our comfort zones
to fulfill His purposes.
In essence, Luke 5:1-11 highlights faith, humility, and the call to discipleship.
It serves as an invitation for all believers to trust God,
recognize their need for Him, and follow Jesus in reaching others.
SMALL GROUP CONVOS
1) Read Luke 5:1-11 together.
2) Share your own observations and insights. Ask questions.
3) How will you apply these lessons to your life?
