We return this week to our walk through Genesis and consider the tragic story of Cain and Abel, a story which offers significant insight to the implications of the life choices we each make.
- Share with the group about one of the best “teams” you have ever been a part of, such as an athletic team, work team, club, committee, or other group whose members succeeded in laying aside their self-centeredness for the sake of a better goal.
- Read Genesis 4:1-7 and Hebrews 11:4. Why was the Lord pleased with Abel’s offering but not Cain’s? How does their example speak to us about religious practices today?
- What does Cain’s response to God reveal about the condition of his heart? What spiritual principles are noted in Genesis 4:7?
- Read Genesis 4:8-12. What choices do we see Cain making in these verses? How would you describe Cain’s relationship with God?
- Read Genesis 4:13-16. What are the key points of this conversation between God and Cain?
- Read Genesis 4:17-24. What examples of rebellion against God by Cain and his descendants do you see in these verses?
- Read Genesis 4:25-26. What signs of hope do you see here?
- As you reflect on this entire story of Cain and Abel, what is one lesson you wish to apply to your own life? What hope is there for humanity despite our tendency towards self-centeredness?
