Leviticus 8:22-24 Sermon notes
November 5, 2023

This was an important day in the life of Israel. What they had longed for had finally come to pass. They had longed for a place where everyone could come and worhsip together and would remind them that the Lord lived among them; and there was now a mediator between the LORD and each Israelite.

This chapter begins with the ordination, the cleaning, the robing, the anointing, the atoning for, and the installment of the priests.

There task would be symbolized by Moses placeing blood on their right ear, right thumb, and right big toe.

But what does all of this mean? Here we discover a beautiful scene of the Levites being set apart for the ministry, to serve the LORD, and the people. It is also the vivid picture of what happens when someone surrenders their heart to Jesus Christ.

  1. Their ordination. It is God who call people, and then sets them apart to serve Him.
  2. Their washing. This would symbolize making what was unholy, holy, and what was unclean, clean.
  3. Their garments. This would signify the task they had been given to do, and the promise our Lord would equip them. Paul makes this connection in Ephesians 4:20-22 where he states that we, as Christians should take off the old clothes, or conduct, and put on the new clothes.
  4. Anointing. Anything that was anointed was set apart for the LORD. The oil represents the Holy Spirit.
  5. The atonement. It is interesting to me that it is a ram that was our Lord chose to be used for this sacrifice. (Abraham and Isaac)
  6. The installment. This took 7 days, allowing them to truly understand what has truly happened in their lives.
  7. This leads us to our text, where the symbolism is easy. They (we) are the listen with the intent to obey what our Lord says, serving him with all we are, and following only in His steps.

So have you made this commitment this morning? Then come, He is waiting for you.
