Devotional for December 10-16, 2023
Message Overview:
Ever marvel at the miracles depicted in the Bible and wonder if they hold relevance for us in our modern lives?
This message started with an amazing testimony from David and Libby, who share a miraculous story about their daughter’s pregnancy that beautifully captures the concept of God’s wonder. Our conversation then shifts to one of the most miraculous events in the Bible - Jesus walking on water. Listen in as we explore this event in detail, unpacking the disciples’ experiences and reflecting on how it applies to our lives today. We focus on how the disciples transitioned from moments of wonder to facing challenges, highlighting the swift transitions we often experience in life. As we navigate these waters, we discuss the importance of inviting Jesus into our boat, especially during our daily struggles.
We concluded with a reminder that the disciples struggled to row for 3.5 miles before Jesus showed up. This served as a reminder that you might be at mile 1 and you’ll have to keep rowing but Jesus will eventually show up but you might be at mile 3.5 and Jesus is already on his way. All we need to do is invite him into the boat.
Devotional Guide:
Day 1 - John 6:14-29
Today, we’re delving into the incredible miracle of Jesus walking on water. This event reminds us that Jesus’ presence can bring calm and peace into the midst of our personal storms. As you reflect on these verses, consider the storms in your life right now. How can you invite Jesus into your boat amidst these turbulent times?
Day 2 - Matthew 14:22-36
This is Matthew’s account of Jesus walking on the water. It looks a little different than what we read in John but the thought is still the same. Jesus comes to us in our storms and is there to bring us peace right when we need it. As you reflect on these verses, note some of the differences between what Matthew writes and what John writes. What does it mean to you to invite Jesus into your boat, especially during struggles or storms in your life? How might doing so change your experience or perspective on these challenges?
Day 3 - Luke 8:22-25
In today’s passage, we see Jesus calming the storm, displaying His authority over nature. As we journey through life, we will encounter storms that threaten to overwhelm us. But like the disciples, we can call on Jesus, trusting in His power to bring calm and peace. What storms are you facing right now? How can you invite Jesus to bring peace into these situations?
Day 4 - Mark 6:45-52
Mark’s account of Jesus walking on water highlights the disciples’ fear and amazement. Despite their fear, Jesus reassures them with His presence and immediately calms the storm. This reassurance is also available to us when we invite Jesus into our storms. How can you invite Jesus into your fears and anxieties today? Reflect on the disciples’ reaction to seeing Jesus walking on water. Their hearts were hardened and they didn’t understand the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000.
How does this account help us understand our own tendencies to forget God’s previous miracles when faced with new challenges?
Day 5 - Philippians 4:6-9
As we conclude this week, we are reminded of the peace that surpasses all understanding that is available to us through Christ Jesus. As you reflect on the storms you’re navigating, remember to present your requests to God in prayer, and experience His peace.
How can you incorporate prayer into your daily routine to experience God’s peace amidst life’s storms?
