SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS
Warm Up Question: Do you tend to instigate conflict or avoid conflict? If there are couples, maybe have them answer for each other!
HEAD: These questions help us examine the Word.
1. Read 2 Timothy 2:14-19. Based on these verses, what kinds of conflicts were happening inside the church?
2. Paul warns against “fighting about words” (v. 14). What do you think he means by this? Can you think of examples of “word battles” that can be destructive in a church community
3. Hymenaeus and Philetus are named as examples of those who have “departed from the truth” (v. 18). What specific false teaching did they promote, and why was it so dangerous?
4. In verse 15, Paul urges Timothy to “correctly teach the word of truth.” Why is this so crucial? How does the image of ploughing or “cutting a straight path” help us understand this?
5. How can we distinguish between essential doctrines (die for issues) and secondary or tertiary issues (divide for or debate for issues)? What criteria should we use? What problems arise when we get our priorities backwards?
HEART: These questions help us wrestle with what we believe.
6. Have you ever been involved in a “word battle” that was ultimately destructive? What did you learn from that experience?
7. Where in your life are you currently tempted to fall into either of the two ditches?
HAND: These questions help us bring truth and beliefs into our everyday life.
8. How can you personally study the word of truth more diligently?
