Scripture
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey. —Zechariah 9:9 (NIV)6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. —Luke 2:6-7 (NIV)
33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. —Luke 10:33-34 (NIV)

Study Guide
Step One: Icebreaker (Optional)
Describe the perfect leader. What character traits do they possess? What makes a leader worth following?
Step Two: Open
Ask someone in your group to pray to open your time together. Ask another person to read Zechariah 9:9.
Step Three: Discuss
- Weekend Message: What was most challenging, encouraging, confusing, or stood out most to you?
- A Spiritual Winter: In the context of Zechariah, it can be said that the nation of Israel was experiencing a “spiritual winter.” Their relationship with God was cold and lifeless. Have you ever experienced this type of season in your own life? What brought you out of it?
- Jesus as King: Why is it important to understand Jesus as the King? While the role of a king was well understood in ancient Israel, the concept can be somewhat foreign to people today. What apprehensions might people today have about having a King?
- King of Humility: What’s the significance of the image of the King riding in on a donkey? How does this contrast with the typical image of a king/leader in today’s world?
- Cultural Expectations: Considering our culture today, what are the character traits most admired in leaders? Do you think a humble king would be widely accepted? Why or why not?
- Personal Application: In what ways does Jesus’ example of humility impact your approach to this Christmas season? How might this posture be lived out personally in your own traditions?
Step Four: Close in Prayer
Ask someone in your group to close in prayer, focusing on specific requests for people to find and follow Jesus.
