Sermon Summary
In the sermon “Come and See - Heaven Revealed” which explores Revelation 4:1-11, the Pastor focuses on three key themes: responding to God’s invitation, beholding the Sovereign King, and joining eternal worship. It emphasizes the dramatic shift from an earthly to heavenly perspective as John describes his vision. The sermon highlights God’s sovereignty through the throne room imagery and explains how the various elements (precious stones, living creatures, elders) reveal different aspects of God’s character and authority. It concludes by connecting the heavenly worship scene to our present worship, particularly through the Lord’s Supper, encouraging believers to join in the eternal worship already taking place in heaven and to live with an awareness of God’s majesty.
Verse of the Week
Revelation 4:11 (ESV)
11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
Going Deeper
This section of the Pulpit Curriculum is meant to support Bible reflection, and encourage readers to come away with a high view of Scripture.
Review: Revelation 4: 1-11
1. To what extent do the vastly divergent contexts of Jesus’s invitations in Revelation 4:1 and John 1:39 inform our understanding of the believer’s spiritual journey?
2a. What does the sevenfold Spirit of God referenced in Revelation 4:5 and described in Isaiah 11:2 represent in the life of every believer?
2b. How can this understanding help us to cultivate a deeper relationship with God and walk in the power of His Spirit?
3. How does Paul’s teaching on worship in Romans 12:1-2 complement what we learned about ‘eternal worship’ in Revelation 4:7-11 ?
Assess Your Life
The following questions are meant to encourage personal reflection and identify areas for spiritual growth in your relationship with God. Ask yourself the questions, respond honestly, write down your responses, and then prayerfully seek God’s conviction and guidance to move forward to repentance and restoration. In discussions with your friends and family, or in your Small Group, be open to sharing your responses with others in a spirit of accountability and transparency.
1. To what extent do I approach God with the same reverence displayed in Revelation 4?
2. How often do I take time to simply worship God for who He is?
3. What “crowns” (achievements, possessions, pride) am I holding onto?
4. Does my worship focus more on God’s attributes or my needs?
5. How does my daily life reflect recognition of God’s sovereignty?
Application
A key objective of this Pulpit Curriculum is taking God’s truth as exposed in the sermon and helping people apply that truth in practical and intentional ways to plot a course toward obedience and transformation. This section is intended to achieve that objective.
• What steps will you take to join corporate worship more regularly?
• Consider and make a list of action points to create a daily routine of personal intimate focused worship.
• What is your plan for studying and meditating on God’s attributes?
• How will you undertake the process of maintaining a worship journal documenting God’s character and works? Consider including Scripture passages in it that emphasize different aspects of God’s supreme authority, control over creation, and ultimate purpose.
• How will you practice surrendering all your ‘personal’ achievements to God?
• Set achievable weekly targets for memorizing key worship passages from Scripture.
• Do not limit yourself to the above items. Be proactive and add any additional steps that may point you towards greater spiritual growth.
