In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus introduced a radical principle that transforms the way we approach life, relationships, and even our struggles: the principle of the “second mile.” Walking that second mile, though often uncomfortable and sacrificial, is not about what we must do, but about who we are becoming—a people marked by the love and the generosity of Jesus, who went the “second mile” for us.
1. The Second Mile is found in the Sermon on the Mount.
- This passage parallels Moses going up the mountain for the law. (Exodus 19:3) Jesus, the new Moses, went up the mountain and sets down the new law of grace.
- Jesus is the ultimate example of going the “second mile”.
Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God. He made himself nothing; he took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form. And in human form he obediently humbled himself even further by dying a criminal’s death on a cross. - Phil. 2:5-8
- The Sermon on the Mount is a roadmap that leads us to the blessing of God.
- This “map” leads us out of the legalistic life (you have heard it said…) into a life of grace empowered by the Spirit of Christ (but I say to you…).
For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age. – Titus 2:11,12 NIV
2. The Second Mile represents grace and love
- The first mile is about fulfilling obligations (the law), but the second mile is about going beyond, demonstrating grace, love, and kindness, even when it’s difficult.
- The second mile is about serving the Lord because your love for him overflows.
- Mile one can be done in the flesh. Mile two is a work of the Spirit in us.
- In the second mile your get your “second wind”, the grace of God. Grace is God’s ability working through you.
But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. - Isaiah 40:31 NKJV
3. The Second Mile demonstrates you are a child of God.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.” - Matt. 5:43-45a
- To love your neighbor is the first mile - to love your enemy is the second mile.
- To bless those who bless you is the first mile - to bless those who curse you is the second mile.
- To do good to those who do good to you is the first mile - to do good to those who hate you is the second mile.
- To pray for those who pray for you is the first mile - to pray for those who spiteful use you is the second mile.
4. The Second Mile is a choice rooted in faith.
- Walking the second mile requires a conscious choice to serve others, set aside personal rights, and live by faith, not by feelings. It is about acting on truth, going beyond what’s expected, and making a difference in others’ lives
- For we walk by faith, not by sight. - 2 Corinthians 5:7
- In the second mile you take control of your destiny. You choose to travel a mile few will go on.
- It can be summed up in three words…. And then some.
- You must choose to go the second mile while you are still on the first mile.
- It is a choice to set aside your own schedule, needs and personal rights.
- It is a choice to be a servant even if it is not convenient.
- It is a choice to believe and act on the truth.
- It is a choice to have an attitude of a servant.
5. The Second Mile is where the miracles happen.
- The second mile is where transformation, joy, and significance are found.
- The first mile is one of obligation or requirement, or law, while the second is that of opportunity.
- The second mile is not about success but significance.
- This second mile is where blessings and spiritual renewal occur.
