Overcoming by the Word 1 Peter 5:6-8

Worry is, “A sense of

about the future.
Anxiety is an characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure.
Anxiety disorders are the most mental illness in the U.S. affecting forty million adults (just over 19% off our population) age 18 and up. As believers we are also human and worry and anxiety are natural to humans. BUT, just like any feeling we may have…How we handle it is what makes the difference. Today I want to help you understand and overcome worry and anxiety. This formula will also help you overcome many other issues you may “naturally” face. Worry gets its meaning from and old English root that means “ ”.

1. Trust Him: God cares for you, believe it!*

1Peter 5:7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
“because is a subordinating conjunction. It introduces a subordinating clause, which needs a main clause to make it complete”

- God is all-loving: He

what is best for you
1 John 4:8-10 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is . (9) In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. (10) In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

- God is all-wise: He

what is best for you
Romans 11:33-36 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! (34) “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” (35) “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” (36) For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

- God is all-powerful: He is able to

what is best for you
Jer 32:17 ‘Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too for you.

2. Humble yourself: God will you. Wait for it!

Pride breeds worry
1 Peter 5:6

yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the time he may exalt you,

“therefore” is a conjunctive adverb ‘for this reason’

“Anxiety is a form of pride. It means you are convinced that you can solve your own problems with your own strength. You become the god of your problems.” —unknown

Vs.5 “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

  1. Guard your Thoughts:

    thinking is intoxicating, Avoid it!
1Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

    • “be sober or Sober-minded” is often translated as “self-controlled”. We must think clearly in tough times.
    • The word means ‘Free from the influence of intoxicants’ by relation “to avoid drunkenness”
    • “sober-minded” only occurs 4 times in the New Testament. Each time it is used in the context of suffering!

The battle is a

one. Be minded, vigilant sober!
James_1:8 A man is unstable in all his ways.

Mat 16:23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a

to me. For you are not setting your on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 For the weapons of our warfare are

of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. (5) We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every captive to obey Christ,
