During the Christmas season much attention is put on the gifts. What we are giving and receiving become the highlight of our conversations. With that in mind, consider this… What are you bringing to Jesus?
What gift are you most excited about giving?
What do you hope to receive?
After the birth of Jesus some wise men show up with gifts for the child.
And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. —Matthew 2:11 (ESV)
Each of these gifts had a meaning that was deeper than just the expense.
Gold
What does Gold represent?
Gold has always been very expensive - the currency of Kings.
For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. —Isaiah 9:6-7 (NLT)
Frankincense
What is frankincense?… What is it used for?
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Gather fragrant spices—resin droplets, mollusk shell, and galbanum—and mix these fragrant spices with pure frankincense, weighed out in equal amounts. 35 Using the usual techniques of the incense maker, blend the spices together and sprinkle them with salt to produce a pure and holy incense. 36 Grind some of the mixture into a very fine powder and put it in front of the Ark of the Covenant, where I will meet with you in the Tabernacle. You must treat this incense as most holy. —Exodus 30:34-36 (NLT)
What does frankincense represent?
Myrrh
What is myrrh?… What is it used for?
Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away. With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought seventy-five pounds of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes. Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus’ body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth. —John 19:38-40 (NLT)
What does myrrh represent?
GOLD declared Jesus was our King. FRANKINCENSE declared He was our God. But MYRRH declared He was our Savior.
If you were to bring a gift to Jesus today, what would you bring?
