Then seizing him [Jesus], they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. Luke 22:54

High Priest
Caiaphas, the son-in-law of deposed High Priest Annas, was appointed High Priest in 18 AD by Valerius Gratus (Roman Procurator). Both Annas and Caiaphas are referenced in the Gospels and Acts.

At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. Luke 22:66

Council of the Elders
71 members of the Sanhedrin bestowed religious and political power and authority by the Roman Empire through decree in 57 BC.

Sadducees
Chief priests of Jerusalem from the upper echelons of society who believe that this life is all there is.

Pharisees
Teachers of the law who defined morality according to the Torah and the Mishnah, believing that people are rewarded (or punished) in the afterlife according to their present deeds.

Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate. Luke 23:1

Pontius Pilate
The fifth Governor (Proconsul) of Judea succeeding Valerius Gratus, appointed by Emperor Tiberius in 26 AD.

When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. Luke 23:7

Herod Antipas
Ruler of Galilee and Perea (3/1 BC - 39 AD) who had John the Baptist beheaded and later feels threatened by Jesus.

Pax Romana
Latin term, “Roman Peace”, referring to the pact that the Roman Empire would have with conquered territories. Territories would pay taxes and promise fealty in return the Empire would allow some local autonomy and provide infrastructure and protection.
