Broken Cistern Builders

Date: 3/5/23
Preacher: Trent Chambers
Scripture: Jeremiah 2:11-13

Main Sermon Points:
1. We are loyal to everything but the LORD (v.11).
2. You were made to be filled by God (v.13).
3. Instead of being filled by God, we forsake Him (v.13).
○ Broken cisterns PROMISE to give what only God can provide. (Worth, approval, security, comfort.)
○ Broken cisterns do not have the POWER to satisfy, they enslave. (Work, religion, relationships, money.)
4. Jesus draws near and fills us with the Spirit of the living God (John 7:37-38).
5. We respond with LEAVING (our broken cisterns) and LONGING (for God’s presence).

Read the Passage
Read the Scripture passage aloud as a group. When you’re done reading, take some time to share observations about the passage. Try not to move into interpretation or application yet. Just spend some time observing what the text says.

Discuss and Apply
1. Draw or depict how these two images appear in your imagination: a broken cistern and a living spring.

  1. What is God’s attitude toward his wandering children? As a good parent, what emotions would you feel in this situation?

  2. What are some of the cisterns that the world around you pushes on you? Decide on one or two that are the most compelling to you: take your drawing from Question 1 and write that on your image of a broken cistern.

  3. Take a moment to pray silently for God to reveal to you the state of your heart. Then, share: What cisterns is God calling you away from? How will you smash them and abandon them?

Close
1. What thirst is your favorite broken cistern trying to quench? (Take your drawing and write that thirst on your image of a living spring.) What will it look like for you to bring that thirst to Jesus instead?
