Title: What Deacons Should Be!
Text: Acts 6:1-7
Date: January 21, 2024
Introduction: The office of a deacon is a high and holy one. It is one of the chosen offices in the New Testament church. In Philippians 1:1, as the Apostle Paul addresses the church, he mentioned three distinct groups of people: “holy people” (NIV) or “saints” (KJV), “overseers” or “bishops,” and “deacons.” “Holy people” or “saints” are the rank and file church members. “Overseers” or “bishops” and “deacons” are the chosen officers of the church. In addition, 1 Timothy 3 gives a list of qualifications for the offices of “overseers,” “bishops,” and “deacons.” Titus 1 indicates “elders,” “overseers,” and “bishops” are to be the same as what Paul calls “elders” in verse 5 and “overseers” in verse 7. In Acts 20:28, Paul spoke to the “elders” in Ephesus and told them that they are to be “overseers” of the church (thus telling “elders” to be “overseers”).
Today our focus is on deacons as we have the privilege of ordaining two men here at FBC Oneonta. We need to go back almost 2,000 years to the church in Jerusalem to understand what these men should be. What should deacons be? In Acts 6:1-7, we get some insight on this subject.
