Week 1 Attributes
Compassion and Justice
Be Holy, as Christ is Holy
1 Peter 1:13-16
13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to
you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the
evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be
holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
“We know nothing like the divine holiness. It stands apart, unique, unapproachable,
incomprehensible and unattainable. The natural man is blind to it. He may fear God’s power and
admire His wisdom, but His holiness he cannot even imagine.”
- A.W. Tozer; The Knowledge of the Holy
Titus 2:11-12
11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No”
to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this
present age
1 Corinthians 10:31-33
“…whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32 Do not cause anyone to stumble… 33 even as
I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of
many, so that they may be saved.
Colossians 3:1-17
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is,
seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you
died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is
your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity,
lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is
coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid
yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your
lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have
put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here
there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but
Christ is all, and is in all.
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion,
kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if
any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all
these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to
peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and
admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit,
singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed,
do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
James 2:26
26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
Romans 12:1-2
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off
everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the
race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy
set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the
throne of God.
“How little people know who think that holiness is dull. When one meets the real thing, it is
irresistible.”
C.S. Lewis Letters to an American Lady
