So why oil?
1. Oil is medicinal (Luke 10:34) and is associated with joy (Psalm 45:7, Isaiah 61:3) and so provides a natural symbol for healing.
2. Anointing with oil symbolizes the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.
(1 Samuel 16:13, Luke 4:18, Acts 10:38), so that the joy of healing is connected with the work of the Spirit.
3. In the Old Testament, anointing with oil symbolizes that something is set apart as belonging to the Lord. (Exodus 29:21, 40:9, Leviticus 8:10–12, 30). The person who is anointed with oil belongs to God, meaning that God is responsible for taking care of them.
