Promises Over Principles

1. Promises depend upon faith. (v. 16)

This is a key difference from a biblical principle. A biblical principle is something that, if you do it, leads to a particular result.

2. Promises teach others. (v. 17)

Grace is not transferable, but grace is something that anyone, no matter can walk into.

3. Promises train us.

The primary way to learn the promises of God is to walk in the way of obedience. The false gospel of Americanism: “Do what makes you happy.” In doing what makes us happy, we are training ourselves in the wrong way. The primary goal of the American life is to live life on YOUR terms, unencumbered, particularly by anything that would hinder you from being happy. But life is a series of events that encumber us. Friendships, responsibilities, bills, jobs, marriage, kids, activities.

4. The first promise for us is the gospel. (vv. 23-25)

Incarnation—Jesus our Lord.

Crucifixion.—“delivered up on account of our trespasses”

Resurrection—“raised on account of our justification”
