God-Breathed Living
Day 103: Rejoice in the Lord!
Today’s Reading:
Luke 9–10, Psalm 93, Proverbs 12
Today’s Scripture: Luke 10:20 (NLT)
“But don’t rejoice because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered in heaven.”
Devotional:
Have you ever let power and position go to your head? I know I have—even when I tried not to. It’s just part of our proclivity toward sin and self-importance.
In today’s reading, Jesus sends out 72 of His disciples to spread the good news that the Kingdom of God was near. They came back rejoicing and astonished that even the demonic spirits obeyed them when they spoke in the authority of Jesus’ name. But Jesus re-centered them fast: “Don’t rejoice because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered in heaven.”
Imagine being a manager of a multimillion-dollar luxury car company. One day a few shady “competitors” sneak into your lobby and try to sell your workers and customers beat-up clunkers. As the manager, you kick them out—fast. But here’s the question: are you more excited about removing the troublemakers, or about the fact that you’re a trusted manager of something incredibly valuable?
Lent is the perfect time to remember that Jesus has already defeated the enemy on our behalf. That’s what the cross and the resurrection were all about. He alone is the reason any evil spirit would cower in the presence of a believer. Now, the Holy Spirit lives inside us—we are sons and daughters of the Most High God. If God is for us, who can be against us?
This is the season to walk in identity and authority. Not to flex power, but to stay anchored in the joy of your salvation. That’s your true position. That’s your reason to rejoice.
Live Inspired.
Reflection Questions:
1. Do you suspect any scoundrels have set up shop in your spiritual lobby?
2. If Jesus is the owner and you’re the building manager, how do you think He wants you to handle it?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Help me understand my identity and authority in Jesus.
You’ve given me the ultimate gift—sonship in Your family.
I don’t want to waste the opportunities that come with being Your child.
Help me live in a way that honors Your name and loves Your people.
Give me a heart to see Your family grow in both size and health.
Show me the part I’m meant to play as I help care for this world until Jesus returns.
In His name I pray, Amen.
Digging Deeper
The number of disciples Jesus sent out wasn’t random. It matched the number of nations dispersed at the Tower of Babel (Genesis 10). When God scattered the people at Babel (see Deuteronomy 32), He distanced Himself from the rebellious nations—and then chose Abram to begin a new family that would bless all others.
That blessing? Jesus.
So when Jesus sent out the 72, He wasn’t just deploying messengers. He was making a statement: the nations that had once been scattered were about to be brought home.
Jesus put the powers of darkness to shame by His death and resurrection. Now, their authority is broken, and our future is secure. As Proverbs 12:7 declares, “The wicked are overthrown and perish, but the righteous household will stand.” And Psalm 93 gives us a breathtaking picture of our Lord and King—enthroned in majesty, ruling over it all.
