Key Verses: John 20:1-18
1. Read John 20:1-2; Matthew 27:62-66
a. Discuss why the movement of the stone and the absence of Pilate’s guard are significant to the resurrection story.
b. What does Mary assume about the absence of Jesus’ body from the tomb? What would have been your response in this scenario?
2. Read John 20:3-10; Read Matthew 16:21
a. What fun details do we learn about the “other disciple” (most likely the Apostle John)?
b. Discuss the significance of the positioning of the burial garments. How is this “proof” of resurrection as opposed to the body being stolen?
c. They may not have known the “scripture” that “He must rise again from the dead,” but what do we learn from Matthew 16:21? Why is this significant (Note that Matthew 16:21 occurs a few weeks before Jesus would ride into Jerusalem).
3. Read John 20:11-18
a. Discuss potential reasons why Mary is unphased at the presence of two angels, as John records it.
b. There is a high probability that Mary M. had heard Jesus teach about His coming suffering, death, and resurrection; discuss why she would believe Jesus’ body had been stolen rather than Him rising from the dead as He had said. In what way, if any, can you relate to Mary?
c. How could Mary not recognize Jesus, a man she had followed for some time? In what ways have you not recognized God’s work in the past, only to realize later you had been blind to what He was doing all along? How may God reveal Himself to you even now, and you are blind to it?
