Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit. My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. —James 5:13-20
The Prayer of Faith
Just as the first sign of the life of an infant when born into the world is the act of breathing, so the first act of men and women when they are born again is praying. —J.C. Ryle
For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. —Romans 10:10
Prayer is an invitation into relationship with God, only made possible by Jesus
Prayer is one of the most powerful—and sometimes neglected—gifts that God has given to his children
Causes for Prayer
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. —James 5:13-14
The Power of Prayer
And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. —James 5:15-16a
An Example of Prayer
The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit. —James 5:16b:18
Why Do Some Wander?
My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. —James 5:19-20
We may be very sure that men fall in private long before they fall in public. They are backsliders on their knees long before they backslide openly in the eyes of the world. —J.C. Ryle
Putting it Into Practice

- Head: Do you believe that God is powerful, and works through our prayer?
- Hands: Do you prioritize prayer, setting aside time to meet with God in this amazing way?
