Peter’s Transformation
September 27, 2024

Jesus understands that to be transformed into His image is a process. In Luke 5:1-11 we see how Jesus gently leads Peter to make a commitment to follow Him. From this point onwards we see Peter’s life is under construction.

But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image. - 2 Corinthians 3:16-18

Peter’s steps to transformation

1. CONTACT

  • The first step to renovation is to make contact with Jesus the builder of our lives.
  • Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. —Luke 5:3

2. CHALLENGE

  • It doesn’t take long after making contact with Jesus that He will challenge our trust in Him.
  • When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” —Luke 5:4

3. CHOICE

  • With the challenge Jesus gives us the choice to obey. It is not forced on us.
  • But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless, at Your word I will let down the net.” —Luke 5:5

4. COMPENSATION

  • God never asks us to make the choice to help Him that He doesn’t reward us.
  • And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. —Luke 5:6

5. CONVICTION

  • What causes us to turn to God and be convicted of our sins is to realize we are in the presence of a God who truly loves us.
  • So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!” —Luke 5:7,8

6. COMMITMENT

  • What comes next after our conviction is the comfort our Good Shepherd who asks us to commit to follow Him.
  • Our lives are now under construction.
  • For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.” So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him. —Luke 5:9-11
