Week 1: I Am the Bread of Life
John 20:30-31
30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in
this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of
God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Matthew 16:13-15
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people
say the Son of Man is?”
14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of
the prophets.”
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Question: Who do you say Jesus is?
‘The test will reveal that we all think Jesus is like us. Introverts think Jesus is introverted, for
example, and, on the basis of the same questions, extroverts think Jesus is extroverted.’
– Dr. Scot McKight
Fundamentally, our Lord's message was Himself. He did not come merely to preach a Gospel;
He himself is that Gospel. He did not come merely to give bread; He said, ''I am the bread.'' He
did not come merely to shed light; He said, ''I am the light.'' He did not come merely to show the
door; He said, ''I am the door.'' He did not come merely to name a shepherd; He said, ''I am the
shepherd.'' He did not come merely to point the way; He said, ''I am the way, the truth, and the
life.''
- J. Sidlow Baxter
John 6:32-35, 48-51
32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from
heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is
the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and
whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But
here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the
living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread
is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
- He satisfies our spiritual hunger
John 6:10-13
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat
down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and
distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left
over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces
of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
John 6:30-34
30 So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What
will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them
bread from heaven to eat.’”
Exodus 16:4, 14-15, 31, 35
4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go
out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they
will follow my instructions.
14 When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert
floor. 15 When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not
know what it was.
Moses said to them, “It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat.
31 The people of Israel called the bread manna. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like
wafers made with honey.
35 The Israelites ate manna forty years, until they came to a land that was settled; they ate manna
until they reached the border of Canaan.
Exodus 16:32-33
32 Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Take an omer of manna and keep it for
the generations to come, so they can see the bread I gave you to eat in the wilderness when I
brought you out of Egypt.’”
33 So Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar and put an omer of manna in it. Then place it before
the Lord to be kept for the generations to come.”
John 6:48-51
48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But
here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the
living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread
is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
- He saves your soul
John 6:48-51
48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But
here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the
living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread
is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
John 6:47
47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.
John 6:44
44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at
the last day.
John 6:28-29
28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
''I AM'' changes who I am!
