Death Undone

Recap

Week 1: Bondage Undone
• Jesus’ resurrection has set us free from the bondage of sin that we were all once in

Week 2: Judgement Undone
• Jesus was judged so I don’t have to be

Week 3: Sin Undone
• Sin no longer has any power in our lives as followers of Jesus

This Week: Death is undone

• We have a fascination with death and a great fear about it…why?
• The reason we have such a great fear of death is because we were not created to die; death is not natural.

Genesis 2:7 (NIV)— 7 Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

• Every human being is made up of a temporal body and an eternal spirit
• We were created for eternal life

What happened?

Romans 3:23 (NLT)— 23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

Romans 6:23 (NIV)— 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

• God is life, the source of life, the giver of life, and apart from Him there is no life.

John 10:10 (NIV)— 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

• Sin is the antithesis of God
• God is life, sin brings death…

There are 2 deaths that we now face:
1. Physical
2. Spiritual

Because of sin all of us will die physically, but because of Jesus you don’t have to die spiritually or what the Bible refers to as the second death: an eternity separated from God in a place called hell

Now for the good news!

Romans 5:8 (NIV)— 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Our part is really simple

Romans 10:9 (NIV)— 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Romans 10:13 (NIV)— 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Now the Holy Spirit moves in

Romans 8:11 (NLT)— 11 The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

This is what changes our life
• The resurrection story should change your life and how you live
• Not only does the Holy Spirit move inside of you and begin to make you a new person that looks more and more like Jesus.

This story should change:
• The way you approach your job
• The way you approach politics
• The way you interact with difficult people
• The way you raise your kids
• The way you love your neighbor
• The way you treat your spouse
• Your priorities
• Your values
• Your outlook on life

Paul sums it all up perfectly

1 Corinthians 15:56a & 57 (NLT)— 56 or sin is the sting that results in death… 57 But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus holds the keys to death! Revelation 1:12-18 (NLT)
