Hebrews 4:11-16 (NKJV) says 11Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. 12For the word of God is

and , and sharper than any , piercing even to the division of and , and of and , and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. 14Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our . 15For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us therefore come boldly to the , that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

We enter in a next point that the writer wants to make. As we have studied the rest that we can find in our Christian faith, now he comes to a conclusion in verse 11. The disobedience mentioned, was Israel’s disobedience, after their rescue out of Egypt. They just wanted to enter the promised land, without real faith. Therefore, they had to suffer in the wilderness for 40 years, until a next generation had the chance to really enter the promised land.

Q1 What are we to do with the rest that God offers to each obedient believer (verse 11)?

Q2 Then, in the following verses 12 and 13 the writer suddenly shifts gears. He now describes the strengths of the Word. What is the Word compared with, and what can it accomplish? And why sudden**ly speak of the power of the Word after the writer made his point about rest?

When reading about the sword, we can imagine that God acts like a surgeon, opening our chest with a sharp knife to heal our hearts, like in a spiritual operation.

Q3 How would you describe dividing soul and spirit (verse 12)?

Q4 God can see everything. How would you interpret the phrase “all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him” in verse 13?

Q5 Which three functions has Jesus in verse 14? What does this verse say to people who are considering to give up?

Q6 Is Jesus qualified to councel us (verses 15 and 16)? Does Jesus sympathize with our weaknesses and/or sins? Is His high position threaten us or comfort/encourage us?

Q7 Elaborate on verse 16 in the blue box below. And make it personal.

Close now, singing this song.
