I. “Back From the Dead We’ve Come” (Crowder, Crushing Snakes)
Ephesians 2:1–5 (NIV®)
1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
A. Dead Men Walking—No Life, No Future, No Hope
Ephesians 2:12 (NIV®)
remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.
Colossians 1:21 (NIV®)
Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.
B. New Creation, New Kind of Life
2 Corinthians 5:15, 17 (NIV®)
15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again…17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
Romans 6:4, 8-13 (NIV®)
4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life…8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.
Acts 5:19–20 (NIV®)
19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. 20 “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people the full message of this new life.”
Ephesians 4:22–24 (NIV®)
22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
C. Entangled Again???
Hebrews 12:1–4 (NIV®)
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. 4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.
2 Peter 2:19–21 (NIV®)
19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. 20 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. 21 It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.
2 Timothy 2:3–5 (NIV®)
3 Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs—he wants to please his commanding officer. 5 Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor’s crown unless he competes according to the rules.
II. False Gospels/False Prophets/False Churches
Galatians 1:6–7 (NIV®)
6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.
2 Corinthians 11:4–6 (NIV®)
4 For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough. 5 But I do not think I am in the least inferior to those “super-apostles.” 6 I may not be a trained speaker, but I do have knowledge. We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way.
Proclamation
I choose life in Christ.
Jesus, deliver me from the kingdom of darkness.
I renounce my life of sin and selfishness.
I surrender myself to the Lordship of Jesus of Nazareth.
The life I lead, I will live for the glory of the Kingdom of God.
I yield my will, my thoughts, and my entire person to the direction of the Holy Spirit.
I surrender my plans, my time, and my resources to the Lordship of Jesus.
May Christ live more profoundly in me each day.
May God be glorified, Jesus exalted, and His kingdom extended through my life! Amen.
