Be Holy
Sermon 2 of 12
Part of Living Hope (Series in 1 Peter)—Sermon Notes
September 22, 2019

1 Peter 1:13-21 ESV

13Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

Psalms 138:2 ESV
2I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness,
for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.

Some other translations say “Gird up the loins of your mind”

What does that mean???

The ESV translation somewhat explains it…the words gird up your loins are not as familiar to us.

Exodus 12:11 ESV
11In this manner you shall eat it: with your belt fastened, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord’s Passover.

1 Peter 3:15-16 ESV
15but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.

1 Peter 1:14-15 ESV
14As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,

This word Holy is a word (much like love) that I think is not fully understood in today’s culture.

Love is not understood because it is overused.

Love that show…Love that food…Love that car…Love that fill in the blank.

This word holy is not understood because it is underused. There is less and less in this world that we could identify as holy.

The greek word for this is ἅγιος hagios

It means: ἅγιος hágios, hag’-ee-os; sacred (physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated):—(most) holy (one, thing), saint.

It also means different or set apart.

The point here is that we are to be set apart, different as He is different.

16since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile,

Let’s not skip over these three words “it is written”. These carry a special significance for the Lord, and it is not a coincidence that Peter (the Lord through Peter) uses these words here. Who does that remind you of?
Specifically here, “It is written” Peter is referring to Leviticus 19:1-4

Leviticus 19:1-4 ESV
1And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. 3Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths: I am the Lord your God. 4Do not turn to idols or make for yourselves any gods of cast metal: I am the Lord your God.
