READ AGAIN: Luke 8:40-56

  1. Why is it notable that Jairus came to Jesus in the way He did? (v.41)
  2. In your own life, have you seen desperation become a catalyst for people coming to Christ?
  3. What makes the woman’s predicament most sad from your perspective? (v.43)
  4. Luke has gone out of his way to show us that Jesus has a supernatural knowledge. Why do you think Jesus asks questions? (v.45)
  5. Jesus says something interesting and unique. “I know that power has gone out from me.” How do you understand what Jesus is saying here?
  6. After she was healed, how was this woman’s faith tested?
  7. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.” That’s what the person who came from Jairus’ house said. Do you ever feel as though the Devil has whispered the same thing to you? Maybe you’ve just convinced yourself that you don’t need to bother Him with your struggles. Explain an example if you have one.
  8. Power goes out from Jesus, yet He has no less power. Cleanliness is transferred from Him to others and yet He is no less clean. Jesus can freely give His attention to someone, but has no less attention for others. How should these truths impact your own life?
  9. Faith and rescue are inseperably linked in both of these accounts. Discuss how faith and salvation are inseperable in your own life as well.
  10. Though this story is not a parable, it becomes like a real life parable. It definitely points to spiritual truths. What spiritual truths are taught or reinforced in this account?
  11. In both sections of this story there are multiple similarities. There are 2 daughters, 2 people falling down before Jesus, 2 mentions of touching, 2 things that were supposed to make Jesus unclean and several others. Why all the similarities? Do you think that God wants us to see something specific in this?
  12. Jesus tells the parents not to tell anyone about what had happened. (v.56) Contrast that with the man who was freed from the legion of demons. (v.39) Contrast that with the woman earlier in this passage who Jesus urged to speak in front of the crowd. What do you think is the reason for the difference?
  13. How will you put the truths you’ve found here into practice?
