Moments Part 1 - When God Surprises You

December 1, 2024

  • Life is not always measured by time. It’s often measured by

    .

  • God creates, and

moments for each of us - moments of connection, encounter, and revelation.

5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years. —Luke 1:5-7

  • Zacharias and Elizabeth - together their names mean “the Lord has His covenant promises!”

Hope deferred makes the

sick, But when the desire comes, it is a tree of life. —Proverbs 13:12

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. —Proverbs 3:5

8 So it was, that while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his division, 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot fell to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. 10 And the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. —Luke 1:8-13

1. God the prayers that we have forgotten.

  • Sometimes there is as significant time between the PRAYER and the ANSWER.

His birth will bring you much joy and gladness. Many will rejoice because of him, and he will be one of the great ones in the sight of God. He will drink no wine or strong drink, but he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even while still in his mother’s womb. And he will persuade many in Israel to convert and turn back to the Lord their God. He will go before the Lord as a forerunner, with the same power and anointing as Elijah the prophet. He will be instrumental in turning the hearts of the fathers in tenderness back to their children and the hearts of the disobedient back to the wisdom of their righteous fathers. And he will prepare a united people who are ready for the Lord’s appearing.” —Luke 1:14-17 TPT

2. A moment with God can both challenge and our disappointments.

Zechariah asked the angel, “How do you expect me to believe this? I’m an old man and my wife is too old to give me a child. What sign can you give me to prove this will happen? ” Then the angel said, “I am Gabriel. I stand beside God himself. He has sent me to announce to you this good news. But now, since you did not believe my words, you will be stricken silent and unable to speak until the day my words have been fulfilled at their appointed time and a child is born to you. That will be your sign!” ‘ —Luke 1:17-20 TPT

  • Every time Zachariah would try and speak, it would be a reminder that God had spoken!

Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied! —Luke 1:67

3. One moment with God can change your .

21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marveled that he lingered so long in the temple. 22 But when he came out, he could not speak to them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple, for he beckoned to them and remained speechless.
23 So it was, as soon as the days of his service were completed, that he departed to his own house. 24 Now after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying, 25 “Thus the Lord has dealt with me, in the days when He looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.” —Luke 1:21-25

  • This moment with God changed his perspective and

    his thinking.

  • We need our hearts and thinking to be recalibrated by the

    of God.

Afterward, their son grew up and was strengthened by the Holy Spirit and he grew in his love for God. John chose to live in the lonely wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.’ —Luke 1:80
