INTRO: Have you given something up for Lent in previous years?
READ: Luke 23:39-43
DISCUSS:
1. What is your history with the last supper/communion?
2. Matthew 27:44 says that the men crucified next to Jesus “heaped insults on him.” One of these men eventually rebuked the other, noting Jesus’s innocence. What do you think he saw in Jesus that made him change his perspective during their crucifixion?
3. Is it surprising to you that Jesus responded so positively to the simple confession that the second criminal made to him on the cross?
4. Do you know of someone who made a “deathbed conversion” like the second criminal crucified next to Jesus? Have you ever had mixed feelings about last-minute confessions of Christ?
5. “Today you will be with me in paradise.” Do you ever doubt this promise? What do you think the second criminal saw in Jesus on the cross that gave him confidence in Jesus’s promise?
6. Why do you think we are fascinated with last meals? Have you thought of the last supper as Jesus’s pre-execution meal?
PRAY:
Lord, thank You for going to the cross for us. Thank You for hearing us when we cry out to You, for accepting our simple confessions of faith. Thank You for being a king who will share His kingdom with us.
