Life Group Questions
Key Passages: Romans 16
1. Read Romans 16:1-5
a. In verse one, Phoebe is called a “servant of the church in Cenchrea.” This word servant is where we get our word “Deacon.” Discuss Paul’s placing Phoebe before anyone else and specifically calling her deacon. Are there any implications for the church today? How does this work with 1 Timothy 3:8-13, written around the same time as The Book of Romans?
b. In the first century, it was customary to introduce the Husband and then the wife. In verse 3, Paul introduced Pricilla, the wife, first, which would have been scandalous for the time. Why would Paul do this?
c. We are told in verse 5 that Pricilla and Aquila have a church in their home. Why is this significant? How does this home church relate to the Roman church as a whole? What can we learn from the way the Roman church was organized?
2. Read Romans 16:6-11
a. In verse 10, we read about the “household of Aristobulus,” who is thought to be the Herod or Jewish king of the time. Why would Paul not name names?
b. Likewise, in verse 11, we have the “household of Narcissus.” Share examples, if you have them, of families you’ve seen divided over the gospel.
3. Read 16:17-20
a. We are instructed by Paul to “note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them,” is this something you have had to do? If so, what did that process look like?
b. Share some examples from today of those who use “smooth words and flattering speech [to] deceive the hearts of the simple.”
