Contentment and Coveting

Exodus 20:17

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

What does coveting mean?

- Coveting is an for what we do not have and what we do not need.

Test: Has the thing you want taken the place of your primary affection?

Test: Does the thing you want distract you from what matters most?

Test: What are you willing to do to get the thing you want?

What do we covet?

Why is coveting a big deal?

- Coveting demeans God and distances you from Him.

- Coveting distracts you from people and distances you from them.

- Coveting devalues your Gospel identity and distances you from it.

How do we stop coveting?

How do we start being content?

Right now, you have salvation won by God for you. (Romans 5:8)

Right now, you have the presence of God with you. (Matthew 28:20)

Right now, you have provision given by God to you. (James 1:17)

Right now, you have a new identity spoken by God over you. (Romans 8:15)

Right now, you have a future secured by God for you. (Revelation 21:1-5)
