The Gift of Praise

The Bible is full of praise.
Praise- To esteem someone or something and to communicate this esteem either to that person or to others.

Psalm 9:1,2 ESV

2I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.

Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.

14I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

Luke 1:46-56 ESV

46And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, 47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; 52he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; 53he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. 54He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.” 56And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.

Mary.jpgMary’s Magnificat

What is the Magnificat?

Magnificat is Latin for “My Soul Magnifies the Lord”

This magnificat follows a pattern that is seen in other songs of praise. That pattern is Thanking God, and then telling why one is thankful.

What we see here is that Mary’s entire being is caught up in magnifying the Lord.

Habakkuk 3:17-19 ESV
17Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, 18yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. 19God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer’s; he makes me tread on my high places.

When the going gets tough…
I am tempted to always GRAB AND GET, MANHANDLE AND MANAGE.

But the example of Mary is surrender…and she is blessed among women because of it…and because of it she has reason to praise.

10“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
