Advent - Week 1

Advent is derived from the latin “adventus” which means arrival or coming.

**  John 1:14 NASB
    And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory              as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.**

Advent describes God’s solution to our world’s problem.

Luke 2:8-14

• 8 In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock at night. 9 And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood near them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. 10 And so the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; 11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is [h]Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a [i]manger.” 13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly [j]army of angels praising God and saying,14 “Glory to God in the highest,And on earth peace among people [k]with whom He is pleased.”*

  Describe it

Advent is a spiritual invasion by a God who is interested in doing something about the state of this world.

Only Jesus could come to earth and dispel the darkness.

*John 1:9 NASB

9 [h]This was the true Light [i]that, coming into the world, enlightens every person. 10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through Him, and yet the world did not [j]know Him. 11 He came to His [k]own, and His own people did not [l]accept Him. 12 But [m]as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who [n]believe in His name, 13 who were [o]born, not of [p]blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a man, but of God.
Only Jesus could bring the peace required to restore us to God.*

Advent means that God is with us as we navigate this world and its challenges.

*Matthew 1:23 NASB
“Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a Son, and they shall name Him Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”
When things are going well…God is with us.
When things are not going well…God is with us.

# The celebration of Advent reorients us to the big picture of God’s action in the world.

When you don’t understand what is happening we remember that God came to be with us and in the end he will make right all the things I am going through…I just can’t see it right now

Advent means that God is the God of rescue.

The God of the Exodus was not a fluke in time but the standard for his care.


Matthew 1:20 But when he had thought this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for [s]the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a Son; and you shall name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”


The baby in the manger has the power to change the hearts of humankind.

** John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.**

Advent means that we have hope for the future.

God will finish what he started.

Advent is a reminder that being like Christ is participating in his hope for the world.
