Minor Prophets (Part 6): Jonah Part 2

Jonah’s Mission (Jonah Ch. 2-4)

Jonah’s Message of Wrath (Jonah 3:4)

Our Message Today

  • Today’s false gospel of love alone.

  • The gospel starts with wrath (Romans 1:16-18).

  • Wrath is unappealing, which is what people are most concerned with today.

  • We’re tempted to water down the gospel to make it more palatable, but we must be unafraid to calmly call people to repentance (Acts 17:30-31)

Two Exhortations
1. Don’t be ashamed! (Rom. 1:16)
2. Don’t be afraid! (1 Cor. 15:58)

Our Message: Creation - Fall - Redemption - Restoration

TAG Questions

  1. What is something the Lord taught you through the sermon?
  2. How does it apply to your life?

Small Group Discussion Questions

  1. Read Jonah 3:3. Pastor Josh talked this last Sunday about Jonah’s mission in chapter 2-4 of Jonah. We looked at Jonah’s intense message of wrath, and how hard that would be to preach a message like that today. How would you feel if God called you to go out and preach that same message today?
  2. Read Acts 17:30-31 & Romans 1:16-18. Do you think Paul seemed nervous about preaching God’s wrath as part of the gospel message? Why do you think Christians seem so nervous to talk about sin and wrath with people today?
  3. When you think about the people in your life who don’t follow Jesus, what do you think are their biggest objections or obstacles to faith?
Read 1 Cor. 15:58. Pastor Josh encouraged us not to be either ashamed or afraid in our response to the world’s increasing hostility to our faith today.
  4. Which of those do you think you struggle with the most, and how do you think God wants to encourage you to overcome it?
  5. Do you feel like you know how to share the gospel? How can we better equip, encourage, and pray for each other to share the gospel with people who don’t know Jesus?
