Doing As Jesus Did

Message Study Questions

Message Summary

Practicing the way means creating space to be with Jesus, to become like Jesus, and to act like Jesus.
“Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did” 1 John 2:6

The things Jesus did were a witness to God, so too we are called to be a witness of Jesus through the things we do and say.
We do this by making space for the gospel. This means taking time to talk to people (strangers) and show hospitality. This often involves sacrificing time and taming our busyness. To be a witness means to tell others what you saw or experienced. This involves depending upon God to find the courage to speak up when the opportunity arrives. Doing as Jesus did means living as Jesus lived in holiness and love for others.

  1. What is the gospel? Could you explain it in three minutes or less?

  2. How do you make space for hospitality in your life?

Consider This

Slow down and simplify life. In order to spend more time with Jesus, to become more like Him and to do more of what Jesus did we should first consider subtracting.

  1. What are some things you could subtract from your life to make room for Jesus?

  2. How can you make space in your life for the gospel message to others?

  3. Read Luke 19:1-10.

    • What problem did Zaccheus have? How did he solve it?

    • What innovative things could we do to make space to share the gospel with people?

    • What’s wrong with gossiping and judging people based on their social economic status?

    • How can we guard against writing people off based on their reputation?

  4. Read Hebrews 13:2. What are some blessings that we might receive from practicing hospitality?

  5. What are some things you could tell someone about your experience with Jesus?

  6. Read Colossians 4:2-6. Whom do we depend upon and how can we prepare to share the gospel with others?

    • How open are you to praying for the wisdom and an opportunity to share the gospel?

  7. What are some ways you could demonstrate the gospel by the way you live and act?

  8. What practices are you consistently repeating in your life that might point others to Jesus?

  9. What are some practices you would like to discontinue or add so that you might grow closer to Jesus and better point others to Him?

Moving Forward – Application

“Rule of Life is a schedule and set of practices and relational rhythms that create space for us to be with Jesus, become like him and do as he did.” Practicing the Way

  1. Is there someone of low status with whom you could share God’s love with this week?

  2. When and where can you engage in a repetitive time of prayer and Scripture reading in quiet solitude this week?

  3. How can you better prepare for a weekly Sabbath this week?

  4. With whom can you have a Christ centered relational contact with this week?
