  2. What did you learn about Jesus’ identity in this chapter? Was there anything that surprised you? How did the miracle Jesus performed reveal His identity?
  3. Read John 5:1-16. What information did John provide about the disabled man in this section? What did Jesus ask the man? What did Jesus command him to do?
  4. What was the Jewish leaders’ response to the man carrying his mat? Was the man breaking the Old Testament Law? What rules did he break? What was Jesus’ instruction when he saw the man a second time?
  5. Read John 5:17-30. Why were the Jewish leaders plotting to kill Jesus? What did Jesus say about his relationship with God the Father? How did Jesus speak of Their unity?
  6. Read John 5:24. What did Jesus say happens when a person believes in him and the one who sent him? What does it mean to have eternal life, to not be judged, and to cross over from death to life? Why is this important?
  7. Read John 5:31-47. What did Jesus say about testimonies in these verses? What testimony did Jesus have that is “weightier than that of John”?
  8. Why didn’t the Jewish leadership trust Jesus as the Messiah? How was it possible for them to miss Jesus’ identity when they studied the Old Testament so closely?
