Build Community Title 1.jpg
Devotional Guide: July 22-27, 2024

Message Recap:

In this powerful message, we explore the pervasive issue of loneliness in our modern society. We’re reminded that God sees us in our distress, as exemplified by Hagar’s encounter with El Roi, the God who sees. The story of Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar teaches us that even in our moments of despair and isolation, God is present and aware of our struggles. We’re encouraged to find solace in knowing that Jesus himself experienced loneliness and understands our pain. This message challenges us to look beyond our own loneliness and seek out those who might be feeling isolated in our community, embodying the compassion, kindness, and patience described in Colossians 3:12-14. As we build community, we’re called to slow down, create margin in our lives, and truly see those around us who might be struggling with loneliness.

Devotional Guide:

Day 1: The God Who Sees - Genesis 16:7-14

In times of loneliness, it’s easy to feel invisible and forgotten. But Hagar’s story reminds us that we serve El Roi - the God who sees. Just as He saw Hagar in her distress, He sees you in your moments of isolation and pain. Take comfort in knowing that your struggles don’t go unnoticed by your Creator.

Today, practice being still and acknowledging God’s presence, even in your loneliest moments.

Day 2: Jesus Understands - Isaiah 53:1-3, Hebrews 4:14-16

It’s comforting to know that Jesus, our High Priest, understands human loneliness. He was despised, rejected, and acquainted with sorrow. When you feel misunderstood or isolated, remember that Jesus can relate to your pain. He doesn’t just sympathize; He empathizes.

Bring your feelings of loneliness to Him today, knowing He truly understands and can provide the comfort you need.

Day 3: The Roundabout Way - Exodus 13:17-18, Ecclesiastes 3:11

God’s paths aren’t always direct, and that can be frustrating. Like the Israelites, we might find ourselves on a “roundabout way” through life’s wilderness. But trust that God has a bigger plan. Your current season of loneliness might be preparing you for something greater.

Today, try to view your circumstances from God’s perspective. Ask Him to reveal the beauty in this challenging season.

Day 4: Silence and Solitude - 1 Kings 19:11-13, Psalm 46:10

In our noisy world, silence can be uncomfortable. But it’s often in quiet moments that we hear God’s voice most clearly. Instead of trying to fill your loneliness with distractions, embrace periods of silence and solitude. Use this time to listen for God’s gentle whisper.

Today, set aside at least 15 minutes for silent reflection and prayer, allowing God to speak to your heart.

Day 5: Finding Family in the Church - Psalm 68:6, Ephesians 2:19-22

God’s solution for loneliness is often found within His church. While no church is perfect, it’s where God places the lonely in families. If you’re feeling isolated, take a step towards connection today.

Consider joining a small group, volunteering, or simply reaching out to someone today. Remember, vulnerability breeds connection. By sharing your story, you might find others who relate, turning “you too?” moments into meaningful relationships.
