The Message from the Manger: Strength in Submission
Senior Pastor Jeff Maness
December 15, 2024
And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. 7 She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them. —Luke 2:6-7
Hupotassó = I place under, subject to. It implies a voluntary attitude of giving in, cooperating, assuming responsibility, and carrying a burden.
Big Idea: Christlike submission is not a sign of weakness, it is a show of strength.
Big Question: What kind of submission did Jesus display?
Main Scripture: Philippians 2:3-11
Though he (Jesus) was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, 8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. 9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. —Philippians 2:6-11
What kind of submission did Jesus display?
1. Submission through surrender
Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. —Philippians 2:6
Though I’m not God, I often try and cling to my own desire to be the god of my life. —1 Jeff Maness 2:6
Cling = To seize, especially in an open display of force.
Where in my life am I trying to be equal with God?
What kind of submission did Jesus display?

2. Submission through selflessness
Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; —Philippians 2:7
Gave up = to empty
You could have stepped into creation with fire for all to see, brought every tribe and nation to their knees. Arriving with the host of heaven in royal robe and crown, the rulers of the earth all bowing down. But you chose meekness over majesty. Wrapped Your power in humanity. —“Manger Throne” by Phil Wickham
