OUR FATHER | PEOPLE OF PRAYER
Part 1: Prayer is Relationship
The Lord’s Prayer / The Model Prayer
9 Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. —Matthew 6:9-13 NKJV
The Lord’s Prayer is a
Truth: Prayer is conversation.
“Prayer is sacred communication, the language of longing, a divine dialogue between you and your heavenly Father, your Abba…” —Craig Groeschel, Dangerous Prayers p.27
Truth: Prayer is biblical.
Pray without ceasing —Thessalonians 5:17
Prayer is more than a recommendation. It’s a requirement for every believer.
Lie: God knows everything so I don’t have to pray.
6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. —Philippians 4:6-7 NLT
20 For as many as are the promises of God, in Christ they are [all answered] “Yes.” So through Him we say our “Amen” [so be it] to the glory of God. —2 Corinthians 1:20 AMP
8 “Therefore do not be like them [people that prayed to draw attention to themselves]. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. 9 In this manner, therefore, pray —Matthew 6:8-9
When we become People of Prayer, we partner and place ourselves in God’s plan.
In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus gave us the framework for our prayers.
9 In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name. —Matthew 6:9
Point 1: Prayer is built on our
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name. —John 1:12
“An infinite God can give all of Himself to each of His children. He does not distribute Himself that each may have a part, but to each one He gives all of Himself as fully as if there were no others.” —AW Tozer
Point 2: Prayer builds our relationship with God.
“Prayer is simply a two-way conversation between you and God.” —Billy Graham
Prayer positions us in a place of
People of prayer are devoted and disciplined to uphold a life of prayer.
Let my prayer be set before You as incense,
The lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. —Psalm 141:2
Point 3: Prayer positions us in the Body of Christ
Jesus made it clear that we do not pray alone.
Point 4: Prayer positions us in
“O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” —Matthew 26:39
11 Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. —John 17:11
34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”
46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” Having said this, He breathed His last. —Luke 23:34, 46
Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. —Romans 8:34
26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. —Romans 8:26-27
Prayer is profound and is the most spiritually contested spiritual practice.
9 “And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.
13 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.” —Luke 11:9-10, 13 NLT
