Sermon Discussion Questions
Use the following questions based on today’s sermon as a starting point for spiritual discussions with your family or a small group of Christian friends this week.
Fellowship—Relationship with a Purpose
• What is your favorite article of clothing? What do you want others to think when they see you wearing it?
• If you could design a shirt that reflects your spiritual condition, what would it look like? [Bonus: Draw it!]
Growth—Thinking About Spiritual Matters
• Read Colossians 3:1. What does it Paul mean when he says we have “new life” in Christ? When did your new life start?
• How do you try to think about heavenly things during your week? What distractions take that focus away? Are you willing to limit those distractions?
• Read Colossians 3:5-9. Write the list of sins that Paul says have no place in our Christian life. Circle two that have been your biggest challenges. Star two that you’ve regularly avoided. How have these sins hurt your relationship with God?
• What help do you want from the church as you strip off these old sins? Are you asking for that help? Are you receiving it?
• Who is allowed to put on the new nature of Christ? (See Colossians 3:10-11). Is our church open to everyone who needs to put Him on?
• Read Colossians 3:12-17. Write the list of qualities Christians should put on as part of their new nature. Circle two that have been your biggest joys. Star two that you want to develop more. Which ones have brought you closer to Christ?
• Are these qualities ones that you can create on your own? Why do we need to rely on the Spirit for success?
• If others looked at you, could they tell that you have put on Christ?
Prayer – Taking Your Thoughts to God
• Thank God for your upgraded wardrobe! Pray for help in purging the old clothes. Ask for His help to show off your new duds in Christ.
