The Danger of Backsliding – Part 2

King Saul Blew It

• Saul was once anointed and enjoyed fellowship with the Lord and was used mightily by the Lord.
• Saul was once wholly obedient to the voice of the Lord.
• Saul began to disobey the Lord occasionally, and eventually, it caught up with him.
• Saul lost his kingdom, his life, and his family.

1 Samuel 15:22-26 KJV

22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

23 FOR REBELLION IS AS THE SIN OF WITCHCRAFT, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.

25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD.

26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: FOR THOU HAST REJECTED THE WORD OF THE LORD, AND THE LORD HATH REJECTED THEE FROM BEING KING OVER ISRAEL.

David Anointed to Be the Next King

1 Samuel 16:13 KJV

13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: AND THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD CAME UPON DAVID FROM THAT DAY FORWARD. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

Saul Became Demon-Possessed

1 Samuel 16:14 KJV

14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

David’s Anointed Music Drove Demons Away From King Saul

1 Samuel 16:21-23 KJV

21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and HE LOVED HIM GREATLY; AND HE BECAME HIS ARMOURBEARER.

22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.

23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

Saul Eyed David With Jealousy and Tried to Kill Him 21 Times

1 Samuel 18:7-12 KJV

7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

8 And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?

9 AND SAUL EYED DAVID FROM THAT DAY AND FORWARD.

10 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul’s hand.

11 And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.

12 And Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul.

God Quit Talking to Saul

1 Samuel 28:6 KJV

6 And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

7 SINS OF KING SAUL

1. He disobeyed the word of the Lord through Samuel the Prophet
2. Took David’s house from him
3. Gave David’s wife to another man which meant, Saul promoted adultery.
4. Saul drove David out of the promised land for a season and he had to live among the Philistines.
5. Saul had 80 priests of the Lord murdered wrongfully.
6. Saul went and consulted with the Witch of Endor.

1 Samuel 28:7 KJV

7 Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.

7. Saul became worse and finally he committed SUICIDE

1 Samuel 31:1-6 KJV

1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.

2 And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchi–shua, Saul’s sons.

3 And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers.

4 Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. THEREFORE SAUL TOOK A SWORD, AND FELL UPON IT.

5 And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.

6 So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armourbearer, and all his men, that same day together.

A Warning to All God’s People

Deuteronomy 18:9-12 KJV

9 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.

10 There shall not be found among you anyone that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,

11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
