Colossians (Part 16): Grace in the Family

I. Children should model Jesus in obedience.


a. Jesus came to obey his Father. (John 6:38)

b. He submitted to His Father – even when it was difficult. (Mark 14:35-36)


II. Parents should model God the Father in grace.


Biblical Essentials Regarding Parenting:

· Teach our children God’s Word (Eph 6:4, Deut 6:6-9)

· Discipline and Disciple our children (Prov 22:6)

· Provide for their physical needs (1 Tim 5:8)

· See them as God’s blessing (Psalm 127)


Small Group Discussion Questions:

  1. Can you recall a time when you obeyed your parents even when it was difficult? What about a time when your kids obeyed you when it was difficult for them? What was the outcome?

  2. What examples from Jesus’ life illustrate obedience to the Father? How does the concept of obedience in children reflect Jesus’ relationship with God the Father?

  3. What are some ways can parents inadvertently discourage their children? How can parents encourage their children?

  4. How does the balance of discipline and grace play out in your own family dynamics? What might the long-term effects be of raising children in an environment where grace and discipline are imbalanced to one side or the other?

  5. What is a current challenge facing your family? What biblical principles address this challenge? In what specific ways can you apply those principles?
