“When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.” – John 19:30 CSB
DISCUSSION GUIDE
Examining the Text:
1) Read through the passage in two different translations.
2) As you heard the Scripture, what stood out to you?
3) Are there any questions that you have about the text?
4) Are there other portions of Scripture this passage brings to mind?
Sermon Review and Application:
1) Through understanding the meaning of “finished,” how do Christ’s words, “It is finished” become words of victory? Does this impact how you imagine Jesus’ final moments on the cross?
2) In reflecting on what Christ finished on the cross, which aspect is the most meaningful to you:
Jesus revealing the love of God.
God reconciling all things.
The defeat of Satan and the works of Satan.
3) How do you experience the freedom Christ provides to you through the cross in relation to guilt, shame, and fear? Is there another way that comes to mind for you?
4) Reflect on this quote from Watchman Nee: “Our crucifixion with Christ is a glorious historic fact. Our deliverance from sin is based, not on what we can do, nor even on what God is going to do for us, but on what he has already done in Christ. When that fact dawns upon us and we rest back upon it then we have found the secret of a holy life.” How does this quote strike you? What invitation does God present to you?
