Conflict - The Price We Pay for Deep Relationships

May 12, 2019

Conflict is an important and necessary part of love. When you experience conflict and resolve the issue, it builds trust and security in that relationship.

Conflict is inevitable. It’s not whether you have conflict, but when you have it, how will you deal with it.

Peace & Conflict

Conflict is not the opposite of

. Neither is peace the absence of .
Jesus recognizes that conflict is a part of life, but is necessary to resolve as soon as possible.
“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift” Matthew 5:23–24 NIV

Learning to Fight Fair

93% of couples who fight dirty will be divorced in 10 years

Unhealthy marital arguments contribute to higher risk of heart attacks, head aches, back pain etc.

“Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs.” Proverbs 10:12
“A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel.” Proverbs 15:18

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Proverbs 15:1

“In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.” Ephesians 4:26

Pride vs Humility

At the core of all bad fights is

.
“When pride comes, then comes disgrace” Prov 11:2
“For if anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves” Galatians 6:3
“God opposes the proud but shows favour to the humble” James 4:6
“Pride leads to conflict” Proverbs 13:10 NLT

Research shows that when pride sets in, a partner will continue an argument 34 percent of the time even if he knows he’s wrong — or can’t remember what the fight was about. And a full 74 percent will fight on even if they feel “it’s a losing battle.”

The antidote to pride is

.
Latin form of Humility is Humilitas = “from the earth”

“[Jesus] did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!”
Phil 2:6-8 NIV
