What is your name?

What does your name mean?

HABAKKUK

How could a Holy God use a wicked nation to

his own special people?

Habakkuk in Hebrew: Chabaqquq

Habakkuk means “to wrestle and to embrace”.

It’s not wrestle

embrace. It’s wrestle embrace.

Habakkuk 1:12-13

12  LORD, are you not from everlasting?
My God, my Holy One, you will never die.
You, LORD, have appointed them to execute judgment;
you, my Rock, have ordained them to punish.

13  Your eyes are too pure to look on evil;
    you cannot tolerate wrongdoing.
Why then do you tolerate the treacherous?
Why are you silent while the wicked
swallow up those more righteous than themselves?

Wrestle and Embrace

Genesis 32:22-24

22  That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his
eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.  23  After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.  24  So Jacob was left alone, and a man

with him till daybreak.

25  When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.
26  Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
27  The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered.
28  Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but

, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”
29  Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.
30  So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”
31  The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was because of his hip.

On the other side of the wrestling match, Jacob was different.

Wrestle Embrace

Habakkuk 2:1

1 I will climb up to my watchtower
    and stand at my guardpost.
There I will

to see what the LORD says
and how he will answer my complaint.

It is possible to both wrestle with God over the things we do not understand and
simultaneously embrace who we know God to be.
