Step 1 – Realize I’m not God. I admit I am powerless to control my tendency to do wrong things, and my life is unmanageable.
Step 2 – Earnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to Him, and that He has the power to help me recover.
Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. NIV
Earnestly believe that
There are valid reasons to believe that God exists. Faith is not a leap into the dark, it is a step into the light; but believing in God is always an act of faith.
Earnestly believe that

Matthew 10:29–31 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. NIV

Ephesians 1:18–21 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. NIV
1 Corinthians 10:13 But remember that the temptations that come into your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can’t stand up against it. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you will not give in to it. NLTHow to plug into God’s power:
John 1:12–13 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. NIV
Step 3 – Consciously choose to commit all my life and will to Christ’s care and control.
Matthew 11:28–30 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
