Genesis 1, 3 | 08/20/2023

In The Beginning

We are

(Genesis 1:1)

…made to be

. (Genesis 1:26-28)

We are meant to:

in the ways we run the world.

• Live as

in His world and with His creation.

• Be

in the way we live, think, our attitudes and perspectives, in our treatment of people and the created world.

Sin is:

• Anything outside of bearing His image

the – this we call . (1 Peter 1:15-16, Matthew 5:48)

at the door and hunting for you. (Genesis 4:7, 1 Peter 5:8)

• Satan uses

and to fuel our sinful nature. (Ephesians 4:26-27 & 6:11-18, 1 Thessalonians 3:5, Acts 5:3, 2 Corinthians 11:3, John 8:44)

• Corporately carried by humanity. (Romans 5:12-21)

as part of our fallen human condition since Adam and Eve. (I Kings 8:46, Proverbs 20:9, Romans 3:9,23, Romans 5:12, 1 John 1:8-10, Ephesians 2:1, Psalm 51:5)

• Part of our

. (James 2:14, Romans 7:21-25)

Sin (ways it deceives):

• Starts by

and consequence. (Genesis 3:4)

• Questions God’s

, trustworthiness and goodness. (Genesis 3:5)

• Questions your

and hierarchy in the universe. (Genesis 3:5)

Our Hope

is our only hope of redemption. He is the ultimate image bearer and the redeemer of our souls. (Romans 5:12-21)

PASSAGES

Genesis 1:1, 26-28
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Genesis 3:1-6
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”

4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
