Throughout the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus has been addressing the laws in the Hebrew Scriptures, while also calling people to a higher standard. How do you think the people may have been taking advantage of Old Testament laws around the vows? What would motivate people to look for loopholes regarding vows?
Why does Jesus say, “All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one”?
How can followers of Jesus be more intentional with our commitments? Why do you think simple yes and/or no reveals our confidence in the Lord?
